exPress imPress launch a big success!

by admin

Professor Tawana Kupe, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of the Witwatersrand, officially unveiled our blog on Tuesday 21 September. The launch was a great success with a diverse range of performances from Media Studies students.

The launch began with our very own ‘imbongi’ Fezani Khumalo who recited the official exPress imPress launch poem. Dr Willems shed light on how the initial ideas for exPress imPress were born during the BA(Hons) Critical Media Analysis class in the first semester of 2010. Adam ‘the bassist and busker’ Taylor entertained the crowd with his desperate plea to Dr Willems to bring an end to writing summaries of literature in class and his request for some small funds to supplement his student purse. Dr Chiumbu commended the blog team for their hard work and encouraged all students to get involved.

We were honoured to have Professor Kupe unveiling exPress imPress and we hope he will join our debates! After the official unveiling, the exPress imPress editorial team introduced the four exciting sections of the blog: Express – current affairs (managed by Andiswa Makanda and Victorine Ntambo), Impressions – my diary (managed by Fezani Khumalo), In Press – research (managed by Themba Mnguni and Dr Wendy Willems) and Impressing – entertainment and lifestyle (managed by Kgalalelo Morwe).

Guitarist Helen Makhuvha filled the Graduate Seminar Room with some soothing sounds and our stand-up comedian brought laughter to the audience. Sugar-Ray Tladi truly impressed the crowd with his cool rap on the blog, especially written for the occasion. The launch closed with a beautiful rendition of Bob Marley’s Redemption Song by Nafeesa Jooma and Adam Taylor. Our fantastic MC Anga ’the Face of Revlon’ Jamela did a great job in weaving the show together. Thanks all for your support!
