21 Jump Street: a SPOILER-FREE movie review

by admin

For those of you who haven’t heard, this movie has been a huge success – both with the audience and the critics! It’s a remake of the 1980s television series which starred Johnny Depp and served as more of a drama than anything else. The 2012 remake-cum-screen-adaption has flipped the table with regards to the genre and taken a more comedic approach.

Our lead cops are played by Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, both of whom put on such a great performance individually and who have collectively made room for the best bromance to hit the silver screen in years!

The script is very well written and hilarious at the best of times, even making a mockery of itself as it ridicules Hollywood for “recycling old ideas because there aren’t enough new ones”. In a sense, the fact that this movie doesn’t take itself too seriously contributes greatly to its charm.

The supporting cast is very well suited to their roles, with James Franco’s little brother, Dave Franco, bringing the same laid-back smile and acting style as his brother, serving as the perfect ‘hipster’, and Brie Larson (Scott Pilgrim vs the World) proving to be a worthy love interest. Hill and Tatum are hilarious as befuddled high-schoolers and do very well in bringing the audience many laughs. There is a cameo appearance from Johnny Depp who sneaks up on you (if you don’t take note of his very Jack-Sparrow voice seconds before he reveals himself) and a pretty-funny-pretty-aggro Ice Cube who stars as the man in charge.

The directing, script, acting and soundtrack are all superb, playing on many of the high school stereotypes of today (mainly taking a dig at the hipsters and indie-kids), and this movie is, surprisingly, not as offensive as some would have believed it to be. Yes, there is a lot of swearing and some violence, but it is generally enjoyable.

Should you see this movie? Absolutely! If you’re a fan of movies such as The Other Guys or something to the taste of that, then what are you waiting for? Especially if you’re keen on “keeping up with the times”, because this is the comedy of the hour and has only failed to impress a few people. It’s easy, laid-back and will bring a laugh about on the worst of days!

Give this one a shot.

Have you seen 21 Jump Street? If so, what did you think? Do you agree with my opinion?
