Focus and background

In 2001, the University of the Witwatersrand launched Media Studies as a major through a collaboration between several disciplines in the Faculty of Humanities. In 2002, the Department of Media Studies was established in the School of Literature and Language Studies.

Media Studies aims to equip students with the critical and analytical skills to be able operate in a 21st century media environment and the Information Age. Students will be exposed to theories, debates and discussions about the role of the media in society and as well as being exposed to ways of analysing the operations of the media, media products and media consumption by audiences.
